This Little Raidy Went To Market…

DSC_9367Like so many sensitive, creative types I could happily spend all day, every day, ensconced in my studio, working on my numerous projects and and dreaming up new pieces to make. However, the lifestyle of the impoverished Artist living in a mouldy garrett, subsisting on Absinthe and ambition doesn’t really appeal to me ….gutter, stars etc. So, until Charles Saatchi gets the finger out and calls me, I have to actually sell my own work – to other people – for cash. Zoikes.

So, to Market with me and my wares. I turned up as a first time stallholder and ended the day by taking over the running of the Market. (That kind of thing happens a lot to me ). Oh, yes and I sold some stuff.
So, CRAFT MART at the EXCHANGE, in the heart of Temple Bar, Dublin was born. I love running the show and communing with like minded Crafty Types.

Displaying and flogging my own work is harder. The head tells me that my work is always going to be for a niche market – let’s just say I’m no Laura Ashley, and so I can’t expect my oeuvre to please all the people all the time. And yet the heart sinks at any disparaging comments or glances. I sometimes want to flounce out, clutching my knitted babies to my bosom, roaring – “no one here is good enough to buy my precious, my precious” The liver gets in a bilious rage at times too but I suspect capuccino O.D. at work.
I haven’t flounced, so far, but who knows?

Ridiculously uppity internal conflicts notwithstanding I have been making progress at each CRAFT MART. I’ve been selling more at each one and my display has improved too. Branding and displaying the work to it’s full advantage is a whole new skill for me to learn and I’m getting there. Lots of inspiration and advice from my fellow CRAFT MARTIES has helped a lot. Onwards and Upward to CRAFT MART 4 on June 29th. Drop by if you’re in Dublin (and bring a cappucino for the laugh)
I have a shop on ETSY – Of couse I do . Me and about 1 billion other craftsters.
Being a Charlton Athletic FC supporter, languishing in mid table obscurity is nothing new, but I am seriously considering moving to the Irish Craft Portal where I may actually viewed by some people, and maybe even sell something. (Well, I did sell one scarf on ETSY, in 8 months)
Etsy, to my mind has become a victim of it’s own success and is so big now it is impossible to navigate as a seller nevermind a buyer. Unless I spend about 40 hours a week on Etsy, tagging and liking and making contacts , oh,  and paying for extra ads and listings I will forever be knitter 56783, on page 1239, 2nd pic down on the right. “What’s that you say? Oh yes, you’ve died of boredom on page 67. Ah.”

However please feel free to prove me wrong and go like, favourite and buy everything on  today in the massive closing down sale…..Cue online stampede…

I do this when considering the eternal dilemma of the Crafty Creative – Do you make what you love or do you follow the market trends and make what sells? But, that, my friends is a discussion for another day.
